Three New Composite Machines

Stringer Laminator: builds a variety of long thermoset stringer laminates for the aircraft industry.
  • Forms 12" wide laminates up to 36 feet long.
  • Carriage holds 3 different rolls of thermoset Stringer laminator for thermoset prepreg fabric.prepreg fabric and 2 film rolls, and moves 60 feet under closed loop servo control.
  • Material heads individually control position, web tension, transverse cutting, and heating to ensure tack.
  • Stylus cutter slices the unidirectional tape without cutting through the backing paper.
  • Vacuum table is used to hold the laminate in place as it is being formed.
  • Laydown speeds of 100 feet/minute with edge alignment of ±0.010 inches and add/cut accuracy of ±0.030 inches.
  • Turret loading system to automate material changeover.

    Bladder Wrapper : assembling five bladder wrapping machine segments created a machine capable of wrapping 46' bladdersfor the aircraft industry. Aircraft industry Bladder Wrapper.
  • Finite Element Analysis ensured proper frame design, as each of the five machine modules had to generate over 5000 pounds of clamping force during certain steps of the wrapping process.
  • Dramatically decreased tool changeover time by utilizing creative tooling geometry, allowing the operator to perform a complete tooling change with the push of a button.

  • Innovative machine construction facilitates cleaning and maintenance.
  • Automatic bladder inflation and process optimization minimize manual operator tasks and thereby increase throughput.
    Flat Tape Laying Machine : capable of laying, compacting, and cutting prepreg thermoset tapes. Aircraft industry Bladder Wrapper.
  • Gantry provided motion in the Y-direction, while the translating and rotating table surface provided motion in the X and directions, respectively.
  • A stylus cutter enabled precise cutting of the unidirectional tape without cutting through the backing paper.
  • Ultrasonic and E-Beam curing technologies allowed curing of the composite panels during lay-up.
  • A closed circuit video camera focused on the work surface for process monitoring.
  • Provided all safety systems to contain E-Beam radiation.
